PROJECT 1

CASE STUDY:

PROPOSING PASSIVE DESIGN BUILDING STRATEGIES

OBJECTIVES

- To identify and define the principles of heat transfer in relation to buildings and people.

- To understand what is thermal comfort and discuss factors relating to thermal comfort.

- To analyze the effect of thermal comfort factors relating to thermal comfort.

- To be able to criticize design of the space in terms of thermal comfort by referring to MS1525, UBBL, GBI standards.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

- Identify environmental conditions related to site conditions, climate, etc.

- Explain the effects of the sun on the termal performance of buildings.

- Explain the effect of insulation, thermal mass and air movement on thermal performance of buildings.

In this project, we, in groups of six, were to select a building that exhibits shortcomings in regards to thermal comfort. We chose one of our teammate's house, as he has frequently complained about the enormous heat gain, stuffyness and poor air ventilation. With regrading issues, we were to study the cause and effect, as well as propose a new a design improvements featuring environmentally sustainable strategies and techniques in order to combat those difficiencies. We also did the calculations for both before and after the proposed changes, and thus show how big of an improvement the our design was.
