week 1

The start, for this module we are required to give back to the community, and therefore in groups we tasked ourselves to participate in The Environment Enhancing Project, sponsored by OCBC bank + collaboration with JCI. The objective of the project was to improve the community standards and to come up with an innovative design that would cater to the budget of the project. After which we as group begin to start primary research of the area.

Fortunate for us one of the members was raised in Kepong and had greater knowledge of the its essence and whereabouts.

week 2

The first site visit, so the exploring begun, we first visited Jinjang Utara to analyze and figure out which parts of this site would be most appropriate for the project at hand, I began to shoot ideas here and there, but everything seems to have some sort of repercussion due to congestion and in-organization of the town. Eventually, some of the group members started to notice that everyone seemed to be cycling around, from there the initial spurt of possibly some sort of design relating to cycling, to relate to the community.

week 3

After our site visit the previous week there were gatherings to meet up and discuss the findings at Jinjang. The activities and issues of the site were brought up as well as the connectivity, circulation etc., the usual site analysis stuff. We then begun to isolate the usual activities that the community practice daily and where they gather and spend most of their time. The idea of the bike rack, was to be located at every gather area with high population density.

Eventually we identified the main topics and sub topics and begun to distribute the workload.

week 4

After the compilation, the proposal is as below. In which there is an exploration of the cycling culture and specifics which then explore the best locations to install the bicycle racks.

week 5

After the compilation, the proposal is as below. In which there is an exploration of the cycling culture and specifics which then explore the best locations to install the bicycle racks.

The week after submission, my group mates and had to think about a few new things, as based on feedback form them, we were now to deviate away from racks, and design a more supreme circuit or track and that could then supplement the bicycle rack. However during our second visit to site, after walking around and brainstorming they seemed to be nothing coming up, until we stumbled upon the park, and there seemed to be a variety of the community and it drew us to picking that as our site, as there were children, teenagers and adults cycling, jogging, running etc.

However in terms of a budgeting we were limited, as a complete refurbishment was out of the question, and so I proposed an idea to them regarding a type of plays-scape, that would not engulf the whole park, but just a part of it, and then we could target the community and figure out issues regarding the site relevant to that.

The essence of community and township was strong in the area, being easily accessible, and having quite a few shop lots surrounding it, the park became atomically a hub of attraction, overwhelming all other hotspot.

However the park seemed already pretty fairy well equipped with a basketball court, playground, empty field, volleyball, badminton and other activity vicinities. Most of the peak times would be in the mornings and evenings when people come out to jog and cycle, and during the evening the full force of the community is felt, but obviously higher inflow during the weekends.

Another things is how during the weekends during the day most of the ladies use the field/court as dancing platform and during the night the car park becomes a night market.

week 6

To develop our second design proposal, we conducted interviews with several people at the park. We then considered a lot of different things in our design based on the feedback.

With our findings, we have discovered a lack of interaction between the user groups that utilize the park. Each group has the tendency of keeping to their own corner of the park. Another issue within the park is the lack of seating available to accommodate the amount of users. Existing seats are located in odd and inconvenient spots of the site, making it a hassle to walk to the seating area.

We then ultimately decided to design a playscape in the park to enhance and improve the existing positive elements of the park.

week 7

After the information was processed by us we then distributed the task amongst ourselves for the submission at the end of the week, we split into groups that would design the playscape, while others worked on the narrative which was what I did, the concept of the playscape and other elements and combine it in the e-poster.

PLAYSCAPE DESIGN

is to highlight the verticality and horizontality of the open area, using netting made for outdoors as well as weather proof materials such as metallic poles. Our design will be located under the shade of the existing trees. Creating an environment where users of all ages, from children to the elderly, will fully utilize and enjoy. The playscape will also provide more seating to accommodate its users. Essentially maximizing the parks full potential and contributing a productive element to the community.

week 8

To develop our second design proposal, we conducted interviews with several people at the park. We then considered a lot of different things in our design based on the feedback.

With our findings, we have discovered a lack of interaction between the user groups that utilize the park. Each group has the tendency of keeping to their own corner of the park. Another issue within the park is the lack of seating available to accommodate the amount of users. Existing seats are located in odd and inconvenient spots of the site, making it a hassle to walk to the seating area.

After the poster submission, amendments were made and implemented in to the design, and the task was split again, I was then tasked to make the video, while the rest would work on producing a 1;20 prototype.

I made another visit to the site during late noon, and recorded and interviewed more of the locals to gather more information and clips, then began going through footage and deciding what was appropriate, after which I head to learn how to use anew software to learn how to edit on windows as I usually use a mac.

week 9

Another visit was made the final and last, to gather more footage in preparation for the final video submission.

Throughout the course of this project, it was definitely fun and to be honest exciting to know that we're actually doing something hands-on in the course even though we weren't allowed to build it or anything, giving back to the community is what architecture is.
